Vom Gegenspieler Thors in „Journey into Mystery“ zur Hauptfigur einer eigenen Serie um die Time Variance Authority. From Thor's adversary in "Journey into Mystery" to the lead of his own series about the Time Variance Authority.
The comic character Loki as we know him first appeared in "Journey into Mystery" #85 (1962), created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby as an adversary of the thunder god Thor. It loosely draws on the Norse original but tells its own story: here Loki is Thor's adopted brother and seeks power over Asgard.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe Tom Hiddleston has played the character since "Thor" (2011) and "The Avengers" (2012). Over several films the villain became a many-sided figure between rivalry, loyalty and self-discovery.
The series "Loki" (Disney+, 2021 and 2023) removes the character from the main timeline. It centres on the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an agency that polices deviations from the predetermined flow of time. At the end of season two Loki becomes the "God of Stories" who holds the fabric of timelines together.
The character shows how a mythological model is written onward in popular culture: the shapeshifter and trickster remains, but his motives are translated into contemporary forms of storytelling.
