Loki Patera — Lavasee auf IoLoki Patera — Lava Lake on Io
The largest volcanic depression on Io, about 200 km across, with one of the brightest infrared hot spots.
Io is the innermost of Jupiter's four large moons and the most volcanically active body in the Solar System. Tidal friction is responsible: Jupiter and the other moons constantly flex Io, which heats its interior strongly.
Loki Patera is its largest volcanic depression (patera). It measures about 200 kilometres across and is named after the Norse god; the International Astronomical Union names Io's features after fire, sun and smith myths.
The Voyager 1 probe already observed eruptions on Io in 1979. Loki Patera stands out in the infrared through its strong heat output. Measurements from spacecraft and ground-based telescopes suggest the depression holds a lava lake whose dark crust breaks up and sinks in cycles, exposing hot lava.
The heat output varies over years, which helps researchers test models of lava lakes and of Io's interior.
